Ancestral Awakenings
An Afrolistic Documentary Screening and Community Workshop
Join Black Futures Resident Artist Nekia Wright for a special communal experience at the Zaccho Studio on Mother’s Day, May 12th, 2024, from 1 to 4pm.

The event will begin with an opening ritual followed by a screening of Nekia’s documentary Afrolistic: Black Healing from Zimbabwe to the Bay. The film acts as a connection point for Black Americans here in San Francisco to connect to the holistic practices of Africa in an effort to repair some of the harm stemming from the kidnapping and trafficking of their ancestors who were stripped of their names, culture, languages, & spiritual practices 500 years ago.

After the screening, participants will have the opportunity to learn about and explore various instruments of afro-holistic sound healing in a hands-on workshop. The event will end with a closing ritual and Q&A.
