Zaccho's "Invisible Wings" a Highlight in New Film "Never Stand Still"

NEVER STAND STILL Narrated by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones, this documentary features performances, conversations with choreographers and dancers, and rare archival footage, while telling the remarkable story of how an abandoned farm in Massachusetts evolved into Jacob's Pillow, a premiere showcase for dance, revered around the world. The illustrious interviewees, who include Judith Jamison, Paul Taylor, Mark Morris, Suzanne Farrell, and Frederic Franklin, as well as Merce Cunningham, all sing their praises of this important presenter and educator, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, founded by the pioneer Ted Shawn in 1933. Zaccho's 2007 performance of "Invisible Wings" is highlighted in the film. "Never Stand Still" premiered on January 27, 2012 in New York at Lincoln Center as part of the Dance on Camera Festival.

ZDT explores W.E.B. DuBois at ODC Theater on February 4, 2012

Events - January 13, 2012

Artistic Director Joanna Haigood will explore scholar and civil rights leader W.E.B.DuBois’ concept of “double consciousness” in a work-in-progress showing of "Between Me & the Other World" on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 2pm at ODC Theatre in San Francisco. The work will create the environment for broader cross-cultural exchange and awareness of identity duality. Haigood will be collaborating with composer Anthony Brown and media artist David Szlasa. The work will feature award-winning performing artist Robert Henry Johnson who has worked with ZDT for over a decade.

Dying While Black and Brown

In collaboration with composer Marcus Shelby, Joanna Haigood will create a new work inspired by the Equal Justice Society's campaign to restore 14th Amendment protections for victims of discrimination including those on death row. The work will be performed at Yoshi’s SF’s 28,000 sq ft, two-story state-of-the-art facility during Equal Justice Society’s annual gala event on December 7th. Executive Director of EJS, Eva Paterson, learned of ZDT from our spring performances of The Monkey & The Devil, a dance-theatre installation about racism and race.

San Francisco Symphony Honors Zaccho's Youth Program

News - December 29, 2011

San Francisco Symphony Honors Zaccho's Youth Program: In recognition of our Youth Performing Arts Program (YPAP), Zaccho will be the recipient of the 2011 San Francisco Symphony Ellen Magnin Newman Award presented each year at the by the San Francisco Symphony during opening week. Artistic Director Joanna Haigood will receive the award on behalf of the organization and the program will be honored during a VIP Reception prior to the concert. For over 20 years, Zaccho�s YPAP has served 100-150 predominantly low-income, African American and diverse children of color annually by offering free during-school day and extracurricular classes to students 7-17 years old; resulting in over 2,000 youth to-date.

Al Pozzo Di Sogno- Benefit for Zaccho & 3rd St Youth Center & Clinic

Join Joanna Haigood/Zaccho Dance Theatre on Oct 8th & 9th as we premier a new site specific work entitled Al Pozzo Di Sogno (Into the Well of Dreams) commissioned by Oliver Ranch in Geyserville, CA for Ann Hamilton's Tower. The basis for this new performance installation will be an original fairy tale inspired by the site. The performance will include dance-theater and aerial dance, and will travel through parts of the ranch's renowned art installation before arriving at the tower.
